The ten traditional symbols of longevity is about taking around ten kinds of materials among animals, plants, and natural objects that are considered to live for a long time. Then, they are used as the symbols of ever-young and eternal life. A painting created about this is called ten longevity symbolic painting. These symbols of long life consist of 10 kinds and they are not only expressed in paintings as they are also drawn as subjects so it is referred to as the painting of traditional symbols of longevity. The painting of traditional symbols of longevity contains human’s wish about living an ever-young and long life. It started in China. However, among traditional paintings, the ten longevity symbols painting that was painted with ten kinds of materials representing long life belonged to South Korea. The symbols of ever-young and long life expressed in the ten longevity symbols painting consist of the sun, water, cloud, crane, rock, turtle, elixir plant, bamboo, deer, and pine tree and materials like the moon and heavenly peach are also added.
십장생이란 오래 산다고 여겨지는 동물, 식물, 그리고 자연물의 열 가지 정도의 소재를 불로장생의 상징으로 삼은 것으로 이것을 소재로 그린 그림을 십장생도라고 한다. 이들 장생의 상징물은 열 가지로만 구성되어 그림에 표현되는 것뿐만 아니라 몇 가지 장생의 소재만으로 그려지기도 하기에 장생도라고도 한다. 인간의 불로장생에 대한 염원을 담은 그림인 장생도는 중국에서 시작이 되었으나 전통화 중에서 장생의 의미를 가지고 있는 열 가지의 제재를 모아 그린 십장생도는 한국 고유의 것이다. 십장생도에 표현된 불로장생의 상징물은 해, 물, 구름, 학, 바위, 거북, 불로초, 대나무, 사슴, 소나무이며 여기에 달, 천도복숭아 등의 소재가 더해지기도 한다.
